A Third-Party Benchmark Study of Four Popular Web Conferencing Applications

03/27/2024 | 12 pages

SRG benchmarked four popular web conferencing applications (Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex and Zoom) to identify and quantify important performance characteristics and traits across a wide range of usage scenarios, platform types, and network conditions.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS STUDY

The scope of the study involved 2 user meetings, 5 user meetings, and 15 user meetings with the Windows PC and MacBook platforms. We also included three types of network conditions, specifically unlimited bandwidth, limited bandwidth (500 kbps source; 700 kbps receive), and high packet loss (5% source; 10% receive).

We scored the applications using nine different criteria for the three types of user meetings and three sets of network conditions. Using this objective approach, Google Meet had the overall best results on the two platforms and for all three types of user meetings. The sole exception was tests with the Windows PC and the 2 user meetings where Zoom had slightly higher results than Meet.

All applications had their strengths and weaknesses with the differences in performance more pronounced with the challenging network conditions. The scores were also frequently higher with the 2 user meetings than with the multi-user meetings, even though it is likely the multi-user meetings are more prevalent in a business or educational setting. Likewise, the differences in performance between the applications were more evident with the multi-user meetings than with the 2 user meetings.
