Performance analysis of IR.94 and eight other OTT video chat applications

Leveraging test equipment from Spirent Communications and Accuver, we completed the industry’s first benchmark study of IR.94 and how it compares with the OTT video chat applications, including FaceTime, Skype, fring, Viber, ooVoo, imo, Tango and Google Hangout.

WE DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING:

  • We conducted more than 200 tests, involving different combinations of voice or video applications, test procedures and test conditions.
  • We analyzed video performance (impairments, freezes, variations in frame rates, A/V synch), current / power requirements, and the impact that these applications had on network resources.
Unlike VoLTE, the performance benefits of IR.94 are not obvious.  We give Skype the edge over FaceTime, but ironically Skype performed best on the iPhone 6 Plus.
  • LTE is spectrally efficient but IR.94 consumes a lot of bandwidth.  An operator will need to balance the use of GBR and QCI=2 with the impact that these IR.94 features will have on the network.
  • IR.94 does differentiate in other ways, including its inclusion in the native dialer and the voice portion or IR.94 using QCI=1.  The latter feature can have its tradeoffs.  Unless things change, IR.94 will remain a niche application for the foreseeable future for reasons that we explain.
