Last week Signals Research Group (SRG) attended the virtual 5G Americas event, which brought together technology experts from some of the US-based mobile operators, as well as their suppliers, and industry analysts. Typically, this event is held in person in Dallas, Texas, but this year it reverted to a virtual format.

Highlights of the Report include the following:

All For AI and AI For All. One can’t help but be impressed by the current capabilities of Artificial intelligence (AI). However, its promises, which are real, are overshadowed by the reality of how it is used in the cellular industry today. We’re walking with AI at the moment while its promises mean sprinting.

The Saving Grace of 5G – FWA. 5G gets panned far more than warranted. From a technical perspective, it has done wonders, but the benefits are not always obvious to consumers or an operator’s bottom line. FWA is perhaps the only new use case that has carved out a new business opportunity that didn’t previously exist. Ironically, it barely made the cut of initial 5G use cases. We also demonstrate the merits of a professional CPE installation with real-world data.

XR Reality Check. UMTS was initially all about 64 kbps video calls. Nearly a decade later, video calls (Skype and Facetime) were first introduced. The Metaverse was “a thing” a few years ago until it wasn’t. Here comes XR (Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality).
