Takeaways from our Visit to Oulu, Finland

In late June, Signals Research Group (SRG) spent the weekend and the following Monday in Oulu, Finland. We had the opportunity to walk test the SYV 5G network, as well as tour the Nokia R&D facilities and 5G factory.
Highlights of the Report include the following:
SYV 5G Network. DNA and Telia Finland joined forces and spectrum to provide large portions of northern and eastern Finland with 5G services – we encountered 2×100 MHz of Band n78 plus 7 different LTE carriers, although we missed out on the 10 MHz of 5G FDD (700/800 MHz) which the entity uses in rural areas.
The Results are In. Our somewhat limited 8.2 km walk on Sunday afternoon generated 956.6 GB of downlink data traffic, resulting in an average spectral efficiency of 8.5 bps/Hz on each of the 100 MHz TDD channels. We provide more details and analysis in this report.
Nokia R&D. Nokia and its “Chamber of Secrets” won us over, even Harry Potter would have been impressed with its magic, plus it should allow for good and timely R&D / troubleshooting / optimizing.
Nokia Factory Tour. Although the Oulu factory is intended for limited production of newer products and shipments in Europe, it was quite impressive for its leveraged use of 5G throughout the facility. 5G wasn’t an afterthought, but a key part of the production line.
