Random Thoughts Following the Brooklyn 6G Summit

Last week, Signals Research Group attended the Brooklyn 6G Summit, which takes place at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering campus in Brooklyn. Nokia has been the primary sponsor of this event which is now in its twelfth year. SRG has attended at least half of the summits going back to April 2016.
Key Highlights and Observations
A Signals Flash flashback. Since not everyone has the time or energy to download a free report(s) from our website, we thought we would take a trip back along memory lane and revisit some of the key themes and share our thoughts from the first Brooklyn 5G Summit we attended. Can anyone say mmWave?
O Verticals, Where Art Thou? Since the various vertical markets will play a huge role in the success or failure of 6G – much like they were needed to make 5G a success(?) – one would think their participation at the Brooklyn 6G Summit would have filled the rafters. Instead, we counted one speaker that we would consider as qualifying for representing a vertical market along with one additional registered attendee (who may or may not have attended). Not exactly the makings for a Coen Brothers movie sequel.
AI-for-RAN Needs Intelligence. The old saying “garbage in, garbage out” may be applicable when discussing the merits of AI-for-RAN. Artificial intelligence/machine learning can improve the performance of the RAN, but it requires training and it requires training on good information. The definition of good information is in the eyes of the beholder and we’re not sure what is really required to drive performance gains versus setbacks.
Anything 5G Can Do, 6G Can Do [almost] Better. To borrow and slightly modify the lyrics from an old Broadway musical, we question, without necessarily disputing, the need for 6G. Many of its capabilities to improve the user experience seem incremental to 5G, while the lure of ISAC seems better suited for other industries, at least in the near term.
