In late October we attended the Brooklyn 6G Summit, an event that is sponsored by Nokia, NYU and the IEEE, but which brings together all facets of the industry, including major mobile operators from around the world, chipset companies, vertical markets, academia, and even Ericsson and Samsung Networks.
Key themes in this report include the following:
Flashback. We revisit what we wrote after attending the Brooklyn 5G Summit in the spring of 2018. Needless to say, the 5G vision at the time has yet to materialize.
Keep it Simple – Get it Right. The general consensus is that 5G was over-complicated with too many network architecture options, as an example. The industry is now stuck on 5G NSA, meaning all the futuristic 5G use cases are on hold, making it difficult to determine what will and won’t work with 6G.
NTN. One bright spot with 5G has been non-terrestrial networks (NTN). NTN for 4G, 5G and proprietary is for real, even if the applications are bandwidth limited at the moment.
AI/ML. Artificial intelligence and machine learning were very hot topics at the Brooklyn 6G Summit. AI/ML can be used to enhance 6G network performance, just as 6G can drive the adoption of AI for non-telco use cases. We think the former will be easier to achieve, but it won’t come easy.
